Total Population by Municipality
The map below shows a classification of total population per municipality on an around the trail. The trail itself is shown in purple with major cities the trail goes through marked for reference. For the purposes of comparing demographics of similar types of communities, municipalities with very large populations are considered in these analyses as "Urban" and ones with smaller populations are considered "Rural". Municipalities that intersect the trail have been grouped into a single region "rural trail region" whereas ones that are outside of the trail region though still within the general area have been grouped into a region called the "rural outer region".

Average population per municipality grouped into urban, rural trail region, and rural outer region. The map below shows a higher average population per municipality along rural trail municipalities than rural outer municipalities. This means there is a distinct correlation between population and the Camino de Santiago.
